SHUTDOWN EFFECT BHUBANESWAR: Amid the consistent surge in Covid cases, the state government is likely to take a call on the extension of the lockdown in Odisha after the all-party meeting scheduled to be held on Monday. The current lockdown came into effect on May 5 and will remain in force until May 19. Despite the state government’s claim that the lockdown has helped contain the spread of the virus, Odisha has been reporting 10,000 to 12,000 new positive cases daily for the past several days. Khurda district, of which Bhubaneswar is a part, has the highest positivity rate of 37.5% even as the situation in western Odisha districts has slightly improved.

SRINAGAR: The Congress and People s Conference leaders have accused the J&K administration of discrepancy in the distribution of the vaccines between Kashmir and Jammu divisions. The allegations come amid a paucity of doses in the Valley, which has resulted in slow rollout of the vaccination programme. People s Conference leader Basharat Bukhari claimed that just two hundred people were getting vaccinated across Kashmir on average over the last several days and in contrast, vaccines are being administered in the Jammu region in full swing. A senior officer involved in the immunisation programme refuted the charges and said that equal distribution of the vaccine doses was taking place in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions. This, even though Kashmiris were initially reluctant to take the jab over fear of side effects.
